If you have not had the chance to visit the visually stunning Prairie Fire Museum, the Discovery Room and the Mythical Creatures exhibition are a great reason to visit. The kids would have happily stayed in the Discovery Room for hours – there are so many wonderful things to explore! From building a dinosaur skeleton to petting a snake, investigating the rock collection, learning more about astronomy to simply exploring all of the wonderful drawers full of scientific curiosities, the Discovery Room is a great way for the kids to get their hands onto science!
From the Discovery Room, we visited the Mythical Creatures exhibit. The exhibit had beautiful examples of mythical creatures from around the world – from the well-known dragons, unicorns, and mermaids, to the less well-known like the Barong Ket from Bali. While there were interactive activities, it was a bit less engaging than the Discovery Room. The screen at the end of the exhibit where the kids could fly a created mythical creature was very popular.
The Great Hall (entrance hall of the museum) had an incredibly popular attraction – the interactive ALIVE augmented reality program. The kids were able to create their own dinosaurs and mythical creatures, then view them on the screen superimposed over the visitors in the Great Hall. It was so much fun to see the kids’ creations, as well as see the group reaction to them!
Overall, we had a very nice field trip, and are looking forward to next spring, when we will visit the new exhibition – Dinosaurs: Ancient Fossils, New Discoveries. Check the All Events page for the confirmed tour date!
