10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art
4525 Oak Street
Kansas City, MO
Join us for a docent-led tour at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art! Afterwards, enjoy a self-guided tour of Mythological Subjects in Gallery P13.
The guided tour of European art will focus on how humans relates themselves to space and how artists convey this concept from as early as the 12th century. Spaces explored include heavenly, treasured, architectural and earthly. Selected paintings, sculpture, decorative arts and architecture will be included.
The self-guided tour of Mythological Subjects contains a group of prints and drawings showing the variety of ways in which artists treated the myths of ancient Greece and Rome. The ancient myths were recounted in the writings of the classical poets, especially Homer (ca. 8th — 9th century C.E.) and Ovid (43 B.C.E. — 17 C.E.), and more often than not, showed gods and goddesses with all too human characteristics.
Classical mythology also included the stories of semi-divine beings called heroes. In the 15th to 18th centuries, the period of time during which these images were created, ancient, classical myths would have been familiar to all educated people. Sources for their artistic representation would have been classical sculpture, sarcophagi, coins and engraved gems.
Museum visits are FREE to the public, but parking is $5 per vehicle for the underground garage (members park for free). Limited parking is available on the west side of Oak Street.
All ages welcome.
Minimum: one family
Maximum: 60 attendees
We will meet directly inside the garage entrance to the museum, in front of the museum gift shop before joining our guides for the tour.
