Nelson-Atkins Tour – Chinese Art

Thursday, September 19, 2013
10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art
4525 Oak Street
Kansas City, MO

Enjoy a docent-led tour of the Chinese Art collection at the Nelson-Atkins Museum! Afterwards, take a self-guided tour of Secret Messages: Symbolic Meaning in Chinese Art.

The guided tour of Chinese art and material culture will provide students an opportunity to study China’s unique and enduring civilization. By visually examining authentic sources and highlighting philosophical, artistic, and technological accomplishments, students will gain familiarity with a culture that represents the language and population of billions of people living around the world today.

And the self-guided tour will explore the symbolism and meanings in Chinese art. Each culture has its own visual language that communicates morals or ideals. The Chinese use rich and engaging symbols in art to convey universal human aspirations: family prosperity, successful careers and longevity. The Chinese believe their wishes will come true when they surround themselves with auspicious images, symbols that bring good fortune to the owner. Such images were widely used to decorate gifts for celebrating important occasions like birthdays, weddings, promotions and festivals. Today, secret meanings continue to pervade Chinese art.

Museum visits are FREE to the public, but parking is $5 per vehicle for the underground garage (members park for free). Limited parking is available on the west side of Oak Street.

All ages welcome.
Minimum: one family
Maximum: 60 attendees

We will meet directly inside the garage entrance to the museum, in front of the museum gift shop before joining our guides for the tour.
