Join us for a Hands-On workshop and museum tour at the Deaf Cultural Center in Olathe! We will attend the DCC Hands-on Workshop, then take a tour of the museum afterwards. The Deaf Cultural Center’s mission is to provide educational and resourceful programs and activities to inspire a deeper appreciation and understanding of the lives of diverse deaf people, including their language, culture, experiences, achievements and contributions worldwide.

Deaf Cultural Center Hands-On Workshop Program

Deaf Cultural Center workshops are geared towards children and offer an enriching and more interactive experience than a typical museum visit. The program helps introduce children to the Deaf community and to bridge the gap between the Deaf and hearing communities.

The Hands-On Workshop is a 1 hour program split into three 20 minute activities: an ASL Storytelling session, a lesson in food signs, and an art project. Our ASL Storytellers are members of the Deaf community and offer a truly unique experience for the children to observe and interact as they follow the story. During the food signs lesson the children learn a variety of ASL signs for everyday food items such as fruits and vegetables. The art project is a fun and creative way for the children to make their own souvenir while continuing to learn about the language and Deaf culture.

We also encourage our groups to take the museum tour after the workshop, which includes a tour of our mock living environment. This exhibit showcases modern alerting devices and technology that facilitate independence and safety in the home and is always a highlight!

The cost of a Hands-On Workshop is $5 per child aged 4 and up with a minimum of 10 participants.

Please make sure to register your participating child (age 4 and up), adults, and non-participating children under age 4 so we have an accurate headcount for DCC. If you have a child under age 4 that would participate in the activities and wants to take home an art project, please sign them up as an over age 4 ticket. Registration is due by March 14.
