Friday the 20th found us at Johnson County Community College for a performance of by the Kevin Locke Native Dance Ensemble. This program was a wonderful way to celebrate Native American Heritage Month, as well as to learn more about Native American cultures through dance and songs.
Kevin Locke has created a beautiful program that really draws in and involves the audience, from teaching the kids some words of the Lakota Sioux language, to having the audience practice sign language, to even having volunteers from the audience go onstage and learn to hoop dance under his instruction! (Naturally, all the kids wanted to volunteer to hoop dance.) On top of that, the music, singing and dancing by the native performers was absolutely captivating. The kids were especially impressed by the hoop dance, which used 28 hoops to convey different meanings.
This was an amazing performance and we had a great time!
